They had killed her.
That thought raced through his mind, hitting him with the force of a freight train.
She was gone. They’d killed her. She was dead.
He could barely control his breathing now as the sickening truth pounded his senses, as the reality set in ruthlessly and mercilessly.
“Oh, God.” He choked, pleading with the Creator as he fell to his knees.
There she lay, her hair spread out in tendrils around her, mixing with the growing puddle of blood surrounding her body.
He couldn’t have stopped the racking sobs even if he had wanted to; he felt them rip through him, causing his entire body to quake.
He didn’t know how long he had kneeled there weeping; he had no concept of the time passing. It could have been hours and all the while he asked one silent question.
Why?
Why her of all people, why the one who was willing to risk it all, who had risked it all to save the very people who despised her, the very people who killed her.
Despair gradually gave way to anger, a raw hatred that spread through his entire frame.
Oh yes, he knew who had killed her, it was obvious.
He stood shakily, his body no longer shaking from sobs but from fury.
They had played him for a fool. They had used him as a toy, a mere plaything. He had been their champion, he had been their prodigy, their mighty warrior and now…he felt a sneer make its way across his face, he would be their reaper.
Taking one last look at her he inhaled slowly, gathering his composure.
They would pay, they would suffer, they would regret killing her, they would regret using him-- he clenched his fists--they would regret trusting him.
Without looking back he made his way down the hill, sauntering toward the gates of the city.
They would pay.
